We’re the UK’s largest dedicated parcel delivery company, but we do more than just deliver parcels. We also have an amazing emerging graduate programme designed to develop the finest talent in a variety of sectors.

We sat down with Jonathon, one of our Finance graduates, who spoke to us about the graduate scheme and working within Evri’s Finance department.

What roles have you had during your time on the graduate programme?

“I started my journey in the central finance team with the role focused toward Evri's establishment and facilities costs. The main components of this role were learning about accounting principles, posting month-end journals and reviews with the respective Evri Business Partners. As I moved into my second year, I took on some income reporting responsibilities, such as client claims and accruals.

Within the central Finance team they have a 'buddy' structure where second year graduates mentor a fellow first year in each area. During my second year this allowed me to consolidate my understandings by teaching the processes I learnt to my buddy.

For my third year, which I’m currently in, I'm working in operations finance business partnering depots. Here we are challenging the operators on their costs and working with them to identify areas where efficiencies can be improved. Due to this, I've had the opportunity to travel around our network and since September I’ve visited 11 depots!”

What has been your favourite part of the job so far?

“Having the opportunity to attend the three depot operations tours across the north of the UK, which our CEO and COO led. It was very insightful to observe how senior leadership interacted with the operations managers, ensuring they were going to be fully prepared for peak.”

How do you find the social side of the Finance department?

“The social side at Evri is a big positive for me. We have monthly socials with fellow graduates and also socials in the current team I work in. This usually consists of an activity in Leeds followed by drinks!”

There’s a strong sense of friendship amongst the other finance graduates and working alongside them reinforces this. We have monthly socials with fellow graduates and also socials in the current team I work in.

How has the balance between working and studying been?

“Studying and working alongside each other is not easy whilst juggling the rest of life's activities. However, Evri gives us six study days per exam module, which is great! There's a fair bit of flexibility around your studying so you can choose to revise in the evenings if you wish to keep your weekends free like I do.”

What would be your advice to future applicants on the Finance graduate scheme?

“Turn up with a can-do attitude and have that motivation to become CIMA-qualified. As for the interview, just be yourself! The interviewers will want to find out what you're like as a person, so you’ll want to come across in a genuine manner.”
